Citizenship & PR

PR Residency Obligation

To keep PR status you must be in Canada for at least 730 days in every 5-year period. The days don't need to be continuous, and some time abroad can count.

Trips outside Canada

Time abroad still counts if you were with your Canadian-citizen spouse, partner or parent, or working full-time for a Canadian business or government. Choose the reason for each trip.

No trips added. Add every trip outside Canada, including day trips to the US.

The day you leave and the day you return both count as days in Canada, so only full days away are subtracted.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Canada to keep my PR status?

At least 730 days in the last 5 years. The days don't need to be continuous.

Can time outside Canada count toward the 730 days?

Yes, if you were with your Canadian-citizen spouse, common-law partner or parent, or working full-time abroad for a Canadian business or the Canadian public service (or with a PR spouse or parent who was).

I've been a PR for less than 5 years. How does it work?

You have until the 5th anniversary of becoming a PR to reach 730 days. The calculator shows how many more days you can spend abroad and still meet it.

Do I lose PR status automatically if I'm short?

No. You remain a permanent resident until an official decision is made about your status.
