Frequently asked questions
When can I renew my PR card?
When it will expire in less than 9 months, or after it has expired. Applications sent earlier are returned unless your name or gender has changed.
Do I lose my PR status when my card expires?
No. An expired PR card doesn't end your permanent resident status.
Can I travel while my PR card renewal is processing?
To return to Canada by plane, boat, train or bus you need a valid PR card. If yours expires while you're abroad, you'll need a permanent resident travel document (PRTD), which you apply for from outside Canada.
Where do I apply to renew my PR card?
In the Permanent Residence Portal, using form IMM 5444. You must be in Canada when you apply. Your old card stops being valid 60 days after the new one is issued.
